about
Head 4 The Higher Ground was written for The Acoustic Guitar Project in October 2022, right after Hurricane Ian destroyed Ft. Myers, Florida and wreaked havoc across the Southeastern United States. A friend of mine had her home destroyed in Ft. Myers, and I wrote this song for her. I also incorporated my concerns about climate change into this song. I have been writing songs in classic country and r and b styles with contemporary and topical lyrics, and this song is no exception.
lyrics
When the clouds roll in and the rains fall down
The river is a rising at the edge of town
Head for the higher ground
When the tide comes in and knocks you flat
Pick yourself up off the mat
And head for the higher ground
Chorus:
Head 4 The Higher ground
When you're in over your head
Head 4 the higher ground
So you can see what may be coming next
When they call you names and tell you lies
My advice, my friend, is no surprise
Head for the higher ground
If you let them, they will drag you down
Both of you will surely drown
Head 4 the higher ground
chorus
When the glaciers are a melting and the ice is thin
It ain't the time to go strapping on your skates my friend
Head 4 the higher ground
It's a getting just a bit too hot you see
To maintain the polar ice cap's integrity
Please, head 4 the higher ground
chorus
Now the human race has had a pretty good run for 300,000 years or so
But I'm thinking it might be time for us to go
Everybody, head 4 the higher ground
I don't think I can explain it any plainer folks
You might think that climate change is just a hoax, but humour me
and head 4 the higher ground
chorus
Well you can frack and drill and frack and drill and frack all day
I'd just like to go on the record and say, everybody
Head 4 the higher ground
We've got a mass extinction event in store
Armageddon is a knocking on your front door
Please, head 4 the higher ground
chorus
I don't intend to be the prophet of doom
But if you'll excuse me, I believe it's time for me to end this tune
You see, I've got to head 4 the higher ground
And I hope you'll join me there
